Tahoe Tackles a Wild June Storm — But Summer’s in full swing.
Lake Tahoe's Surprise Storm: What Happened, What’s Next, and Why Wakesurfing Is Still the Move
On June 21st, Lake Tahoe got hit hard and fast by a rare early summer storm—one that surprised locals, capsized boats, and sadly, turned deadly. Strong northern winds, cold air, and massive waves up to 10 feet rolled in within minutes, overturning vessels and stranding boaters on what was supposed to be a calm afternoon on the lake.
First and foremost, we at Sierra Surf House extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragic event. Our thoughts are with the entire Tahoe boating community.
How Rare Was This Storm?
Short answer: very rare from the north, but storms on Tahoe aren’t unusual.
Normally, Lake Tahoe’s big weather events come from the southwest, riding the Zephyr winds that locals know and prepare for. Our crews are experienced and ready for these typical weather shifts.
What made this one so dangerous is that it came from the north, catching even the most seasoned boaters off guard. These types of storms are rare—and why weather awareness and experienced captains matter more than ever.
We’re Open—And We’re Being Extra Careful
At Sierra Surf House, your safety is our #1 priority. We constantly monitor detailed marine forecasts and only launch when conditions are safe and smooth. We know this lake, and we know when it’s go-time—and when it’s better to grab a coffee and reschedule. It was a tough call for clients leaving town, but cancelling trips that afternoon with our partners at Lake Level Surf turned out being the right decision.
